Obituary of George B. Zlotkus
George B. Zlotkus, age 99, passed away peacefully just four days after celebrating his 99th birthday. Born in Rochester to Lithuanian immigrants, George attended St. George Lithuanian School and graduated from Aquinas Institute in 1944. Following his high school years, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS Lind from 1944 to 1946 during World War II.
After his military service, George pursued higher education, earning a Master of Science in Education from SUNY Brockport. He began his career with the Rochester City School District in 1954 and spent the majority of his professional life as Vice Principal at School 12.
George, “Mr. Z”, retired in 1990 after decades of dedication to his students and colleagues. He was deeply respected and beloved, known for his kindness and approachability. His desk was always adorned with photographs of his family, a reflection of his devotion as both a father and husband.
George married Gloria Balaishis on August 18, 1962, and they spent 62 wonderful years together, raising four children in West Irondequoit. He was a longtime parishioner at Christ the King Church and was an avid bowler and softball player.
George enjoyed a fulfilling retirement with his beloved wife, Gloria. Together, they traveled extensively, including cruises and bus trips to destinations like Alaska, Hawaii, and across the United States. They cherished the joy of weekend and day trips, always eager to explore new places together. Above all, George treasured his time with his family, especially babysitting his grandchildren. One of his greatest pleasures was attending their sporting events, and other milestone celebrations.
Predeceased by his daughter, Ann VanderMalle, George is survived by his loving wife, Gloria; children, Charles (Tracy), Susan (Curtis) Jenkins, and Steven (Kipzya); grandchildren, Brandon VanderMalle, Taylor (Jordan) Fischette, Colton and Adam Zlotkus, Corie and Katie Jenkins, Isla Zlotkus; sister-in-law, Linda Balaishis; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 22, at 10:00 a.m. at the Parkes Family Chapel at St. Ann’s Community, 1500 Portland Avenue, followed by a graveside ceremony at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Leo Center for Caring at St. Ann’s, where George spent his final days surrounded by peace and compassion.
