David Heeks

Obituary of David A. Heeks

Irondequoit- Wednesday, April 2, 2025 at the age of 87. Dave is predeceased by his parents John and Marie Heeks; brothers, Jack, Bob (Shirley) and George; sister, Mary (Frank). He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years Brenda Heeks; children, Maria (Jim) Heinlein, Denise (Steve) LaPorta, Dale ( Kristin) Heeks, Cheryl (Jason) Cady and David (Jamie) Heeks; grandchildren, Dave, Gavin, Logan, Paige, Lucas, Bridget, Amelia; sister-in-laws, Sue Heeks and Ellen Baker along with many loving nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.

Dave went to Holy Cross School, then graduated from Charlotte High School, where he walked to school barefoot uphill both ways, in the snow. He earned his associates degree from El Camino college in California, his bachelor's degree from the University of Rochester, and his masters degree from Rochester Institute of Technology. Being the youngest of 5, he also graduated from the school of hard knocks.

Before working 35 years in various roles at Pfaudler, he had a variety of jobs, such as delivering milk, selling shoes on the railroad, working the Swing Bridge in Charlotte and setting up pins in the bowling alley before pin-set up was automated. His most difficult job, however, was managing his 5 wily children with one bathroom for all 7 family members.

Dave was an avid runner and active in the running community. Over the years, he ran more than 40 marathons and instilled a love of running in several of his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed annual family vacations to the Adirondack Mountains, participating in philosophical discussions with his brother George, reading, solving math puzzles and listening to music. Whenever entering his home, Dave always had music playing, usually classic jazz or classical music.

Dave and his wife Brenda, volunteered for Meals On Wheels for 18 years. His favorite spot to be was with family and friends. His quick wit, rare ability to respectfully disagree with opposing views (and play the devil's advocate) without being insulting made him fun and entertaining to be around. He will be missed by all who know him, but especially by his wife of 57 years, 5 children and their spouses, and his 7 grandchildren.

His family will receive friends Sunday, April 6, 2025, 1-4pm at the funeral home (570 Kings Highway So.). Friends are invited to meet the family Monday, April 7, 2025, 10:00 am at St. Kateri At Christ The King Church' for his funeral mass. Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Donations in Daves memory can be made to Meals on Wheels.
