Obituary of Jamal A. McGregor
Jamal McGregor was born on April 21, 1978, in Long Island, New York, to Lorna Soraez and Earl McGregor. Raised in a deeply rooted Caribbean household, Jamal took great pride in his Jamaican heritage, which shone through in his vibrant personality and the playful nicknames he gave himself-"Jahbah," 'J-Man," and "Jesus." He will also become known to some as "Lefty" because he wrote with his left hand.
In 1992, Jamal relocated to Rochester, NY, where he spent over 20 years of his life. He graduated from East High School. While in high school, he found a passion for football which he played on thier team until graduation. While living in Rochester, Jamal formed many close friendships-relationships that grew into lasting family bonds.
Jamal will be remembered for his unmatched sense of humor, sweet nature, and kind heart. Whether lightening the mood with a joke to make a dull situation better or offering a helping hand, his presence brought comfort and joy to everyone around him. He had an extraordinary gift for making others feel seen, supported, and loved.
In 2005, Jamal made Houston, Texas, his home for nearly a decade. It was there that he experienced one of the greatest joys of his life: the birth of his beloved son, Josiah McGregor. Becoming a father filled him with immense pride and purpose.
Jamal was a natural born protector and devoted family man, he was someone you could always count on. His supportive spirit was one of his greatest attributtes, he showed up for the moments that mattered the most and never missed a beat.
Jamal loved looking good, music, dancing, and cooking-expressing himself through each. And if you knew Jamal, you knew how much he loved his NY fitted hats. He represented his home state wherever he went.
Jamal was a dedicated, hardworking man. He enjoyed his job as a forklift Operator and was admired for his strong work ethic and dependability.
When he wasn't working Jamal loved to travel and explore. He created countless memories journeying with his family and friends to places like Atlanta, Las Vegas, Florida, and Texas. Jamal had a hidden talent of drawing, on his downtime he expressed his creativity and created comics.
Jamal lived life on his own terms-carefree, joyful and always embracing the moment. Jamal truly embodied what it meant to enjoy life to the fullest.
Yet, above all, he valued family. He held a deep and unbreakable bond with his sister Roxanne, his brothers and his nieces and nephews, along with countless aunts, uncles, and cousins. Jamal was the rock star of the family-always full of life and ready for the next adventure.
He had an undeniable way of lighting up any room he entered, leaving behind laughter, warmth, and unforgettable memories. Jamal's life was a testament to love, loyalty, and light-hearted joy.
Jamal is lovingly survived by his son, Josiah McGregor, father, Earl McGreor; siblings, Sandra Minott, Mark McGregor, Roxanne McGregor, and younger brother Napthal Sanchez; nieces, Jeanette Dewdney and Zhaleya Dewdney; nephews, Tony Dewdney, Ethan McGregor, King Colbert, and Enoch McGregor; and cherished grand-niece, August Dewdney.
Jamal will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all who had the honor of knowing him.
His family will receive friends Friday, June 20, 2025, 4-7 pm at the funeral home (570 Kings Highway So.). Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
