Obituary of James F. Shuey

James “Jim” Francis Shuey (1946 – 2025)

Jim Shuey passed away peacefully on Friday, June 27, 2025 at home in Rochester, NY at the
age of 78. He was born on November 17, 1946 in Des Moines, Iowa to Willis Dean Shuey and
Laura Marian (nee Molmen) Shuey, the oldest of the four Shuey children.

Jim attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts prior to studying Economics at
Princeton University, graduating in 1969. He earned his Juris Doctor from Rutgers Newark Law
School in 1979. Early in his career, he served as an officer in banking and other East Coast
firms and as a well-respected business valuation expert. In the early 1990s, Jim opened a
valuation practice in the Arthur Andersen office in Budapest, Hungary following the fall of the
USSR and newly opened Eastern Bloc. Jim would later go on to found his own firm, serving as
Principal at Shuey Associates in Rochester, NY for the remainder of his career. He also enjoyed
a stint working as a tour guide/wine educator/driver in the NY Finger Lakes Wine Region.

Jim was the proud father of three children: Christine, Elizabeth, and Jonathan. In May 1978 he
married Deborah Ann Packard in Pittsford, New York. They were married for 24 years. In 2010,
Jim married Kathleen Hursh in a ceremony in Estes Park, CO. Kathleen and Jim would split
their time between NY and Estes Park, CO where they enjoyed entertaining friends and family
in their “Dome Home.”

Jim was a collector at heart. He cataloged many things, including stamps, jokes, puns, his own
detailed list of wine and beer reviews, and obscure and interesting history and information. He
shared these passions with anyone who would listen.

Jim Shuey is survived by his wife, Kathleen Hursh; his siblings, Janet Moore, Charles Shuey
and wife Victoria Wahl, and Lucinda Cake; his children, Christine Noel and husband Matt
Darling and their children Mari L. Yvaine and Jessica K. N. Todd, Elizabeth Shuey and her
