Obituary of Kay I. Thompson

Kay (Troutman) Thompson, 93, passed away on July, 20th, 2025, after a long battle with dementia. Kay was born on September 27th, 1931 in Shamokin, Pennsylvania. She liked to talk about the coal mines where her father worked and the railroad tracks near her childhood home. She graduated from Shamokin High School in 1949. She worked in a button factory and as a telephone operator, while the love of her life completed his commitment to the Navy. And if you can picture it, she even drove a car!

On June 16th, 1951, Kay married Sonny (Wilfred) Thompson. They moved to Rochester, New York where Sonny's sister had moved. They purchased a house nearby on Hazelwood Terrace. There they started a family and had three children—Kevin, Leslie, and Laura. In 1972, they purchased a house in Ontario, New York. They loved the country and it was close to Sonny's job at RG&E's Ginna Station. Kay was home a lot and fell hard for the quiet peaceful surroundings!

Although an eye problem left her legally blind around 1960, she was rarely idle! She loved working in the garden, that was beautiful! She was very particular with the house and it was always neat as a pin!

Kay once worked as a lunch lady. She baked for PTA bake sales and was involved in Girl Scouts. She joined an exercise class and a social club. She took ceramics classes and made several things. Some we still have—and in one piece! Kay enjoyed working on the Ontario Historical Society's Barn Sales and also at Heritage Square. The Avon Flea Market was a frequent Sunday adventure!

She especially enjoyed working with a group of friends at Christmas who collected and wrapped toys for hospitalized children. It was a labor of love for her.

Kay was a strong, independent women who endured numerous challenges in her 93 years. Her determination and ability to bounce back from broken bones and health issues amazed us! It didn't go unnoticed by caregivers either. She was likened to the "Energizer Bunny" and a "Timex" watch more than once!

Kay was a loving, kind, and giving daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She was a good listener and a trusted keeper of your secrets.

Oh, and let's not forget "The Look"! The one we all knew that told us we were in big trouble—NO WORDS REQUIRED!!

Kay is survived by her children; Kevin (Maria), Leslie (John) Aguglia, and Laura (Tony) Spurgin; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by the love of her life, Wilfred (Sonny) Thompson.

To honor Kay, please consider a donation to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

A service and burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
