Nunzio Schiliro
Irondequoit – Passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family on December 28, 2025 at age 88. He is predeceased by his parents, Cristofero and Francesca Schiliro; sister, Santa Ferraro. Nunzio is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Vincenza Schiliro; children, Rosemary Schiliro-Mason and Domenica (Derek) Sargent; grandchildren, Melissa (Richard) Starkweather, David (Chelsea) Mason, Emma Sargent and Benjamin Sargent; great-grandchildren, Giovanni and Luca; siblings, Tina (Mario) Ciccarone, Peter (Yvonne) Schiliro and Paul (Jenni) Schiliro; close family friend, Nino Giacomelli; many nieces and nephews.
Nunzio Schiliro was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, brother, and uncle whose life was defined by sacrifice, perseverance, and generosity. Born in Valguarnera, Sicily, Nunzio carried with him a deep sense of responsibility to family that guided him throughout his life.
In 1955, Nunzio immigrated to the United States with his parents, leaving his hometown in search of opportunity and a better future for his family. He settled in Rochester, New York, where he worked tirelessly to support his parents and siblings. With determination and humility, he learned the trade of masonry and became a skilled bricklayer. His work can still be found throughout many neighborhoods of Rochester, a lasting testament to his dedication and pride in honest labor.
In 1960, Nunzio returned to Sicily, where he met and married his beloved wife, Vincenza. Together they returned to Rochester, New York, where they built their life and raised their family. Their marriage of 65 years was rooted in love, devotion, and shared sacrifice.
Nunzio was the proud father of two daughters, Rosemary and Mikki, a loving grandfather to four grandchildren, and a cherished great-grandfather to two great-grandchildren. Providing for his family was always his greatest priority. He often worked multiple jobs at the same time, consistently placing the needs of his loved ones above his own comfort.
Beyond his work and family, Nunzio found great joy in tending his garden. He had a particular passion for his fig trees and was determined to make them thrive despite the challenges of the Rochester climate. Each season, he carefully protected and nurtured them, taking great pride in their growth and harvest. He also loved spending time in his sheds, where he could often be found tinkering, fixing things, and putting his hands to work—another reflection of his resourcefulness and quiet satisfaction in creating and repairing.
His generosity extended well beyond his immediate family. Nunzio played a vital role in helping many relatives immigrate to America, personally meeting them in New York City and bringing them back to Rochester. He welcomed them by providing shelter, food, clothing, and guidance as they began new lives. To many, he was not only a relative but also a protector, mentor, and source of stability.
Known throughout his family and community as a tireless worker and an all-around good man, Nunzio was always willing to help those in need. His kindness was quiet but constant, his strength steady and dependable. He leaves behind a legacy of selflessness, integrity, and love that will continue to live on through the many lives he touched.
Nunzio Schiliro will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
