Dear Mary and family,
We send our sympathy and condolences to each of you. Karen and I, and our family have fond memories of you, Johnny and your girls when you lived here in Utah. Play dates for the kids and cook outs. Then later after you moved away, we were able to visit in your home and you folks in ours. Great times.
May I share an experience I had with Johnny that continues to touch and strengthen me. I asked Johnny to talk with a youth group I was working with at the time. He graciously accepted to shared some of his experience in the canyon bottom that resulted in loosing his lower leg and foot. After he finished the story he asked for questions, and one of the youth asked Johnny, “why he persevered, what had kept him going those many days?” His answer was one word, “family”. Then he explained that he had you, and he knew that his brothers would never stop looking for him until he was found, however long that took. That tenacity for family explains a lot about Johnny, and was a profound teaching moment for that youth group.
We trust that the Lord will bless each of you with peace and the comfort you seek and need at this time.

Dear Mary,
I was so saddened to hear of Johnny’s passing, and my heart goes out to you and your lovely family. It’s was great to read the glowing obituary and tributes of his family and friends. He certainly was a man for all seasons, with his many talents and endeavors.
I first met Johnny just after he got the beautiful black Triumph TR4, ‘60s vintage car. A mutual friend asked me to go along, to meet Johnny, and see his new car at your lovely home in Irondequoit, which ironically is only about a mile from my house. Since I also own a vintage TR4, I was so happy that you and Johnny joined the local Triumph Club of which I am also member. That gave me many times to chat with you and Johnny at the various club outings.
The last time I saw Johnny was a while ago when we both happened to be on the way home in our Triumphs on a lovely fall day. He saw me in his rear view mirror, pulled over to the side of the road, and flagged me down. I asked him if he was having car trouble, and he said, “No, I saw you behind me, and just wanted to chat for a while.” Well a “while” stretched into over an hour. I will never forget the serendipity of that meet-up, and will always treasure the privilege of knowing Johnny.
God bless you and your family Mary, and I’m betting he will be up there happily tinkering with something, while he watches over us all.

I am so sorry for the loss of a wonderful man -we all loved our Uncle Johnny! I was so proud of my incredible uncle who survived 17 days with nothing but water absorbed in a T-shirt and a snack crackers who ended up living an incredible life full of adventures and excitement as well as full of family and love. Energetic, intelligent, fun and determined are only some of what pops into my mind. We will treasure the handmade wooden gifts we received for our wedding and for the birth of each one of our children. He will forever be an inspiration of not just what it means to overcome adversity but the to thrive off of it - someone who would never take no for an answer. He was so funny and kind and always up for an adventure. We will miss him very much. Love to all, we are all lucky having had him in our lives!! - Ali Premo - Simmons

I last saw Johnny in early April, and we shared a discussion and reflection on our annual gardening activities, and Johnny shared his wishes to share shoots from a very meaningful tree that wished for his daughters to plant in their own gardens. I didn’t realize that might be the last time I’d see Johnny – I knew Johnny to be a strong, intelligent, determined man, and expected him to be with us for many more years. Johnny always spoke warmly of the importance of his family, especially his cherished wife, his daughters, and grandchildren. I was impressed to also discover Johnny’s special woodworking talent, along with his continued dedication to his family in Michigan as well. I will miss Johnny dearly, along with everyone whose lives Johnny touched.
