Pre-deceased by wife, Mary; son, Gerry; parents, Phillip & Krecentia; sisters, Rose Ebert & Elizabeth Giehl; brothers, Oscar, Karl & Richard. He is survived by his children, John (Debby) Giehl, Mary (Greg Boyer) Giehl, Alan (Nancy) Giehl; daughter-in-law, Barbara Quinlan Giehl (Gerry;) 9 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren; brother, William (Jane) Giehl. In 1943 Al enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp and was trained as a radio operator in Belleville, IL. While training he met his future wife, Mary Martinelli, at a dance hall in St. Louis, MO. In December, 1944, Al boarded the USS Argentina, sailing to Italy. In February 1945 while on a bomb run to Vienna, Austria, his plane was hit. The pilot was able to make an emergency landing in Russian controlled territory, in Pecs, Hungary. Through a series of adventures, his crew made their way back to Greece and ultimately back to their home base. Al came home to marry his war sweetheart, Mary. They moved to St. Louis where he got an engineering degree from St. Louis University on the GI Bill. He worked as an engineer until his retirement at age 60. During retirement he enjoyed playing golf, learning to ski, entertaining his grandchildren and doing many household projects for his kids. Sadly, Al and wife, Mary, spent their final years in the declining stages of Alzheimer’s Disease. Al’s family is grateful for the kind and loving care they both received from the Sisters of Mercy. Friends are invited to meet the family on Tuesday, March 1st, at 11am at the Mercy Chapel (1437 Blossom Rd) for his memorial mass.
