Mr. Ruggieri was one of the best and most memorable teachers I ever had. Funny, challenging, unpredictable, and deeply supportive of young writers – he taught me to love great writing and introduced me to some of the best American writers of the 20th century. What a wonderful gift. Reading the previous comments of some of my classmates (’79-’80) I’m transported right back to our College English class…I can see the faces, hear the laughter…feel the electric spark that only an honest, genuine teacher can produce.
Thank you, Mr. Ruggieri, for bringing me back to such a warm place on this cold Monday evening. You were an inspiration, and you will be missed.

Mr Rugieri was the one bright spot in a difficult year. I was painfully shy and introverted. His humor and special attention to me as an individual really saved me from a deep despair. I know he is peaceful and happy now. He was a humble, loving man who earned the respect of all who knew him. He is truly Loved and Admired and the memory of his dynamic presence is still fresh after thirty years. God Bless Tony! I Love You!

Uncle Tony was my godfather. I will always remember his constant grin and enveloping embraces.
He was truly a teacher 24/7. I remember being in 1st or 2nd grade and him wanting me to sit and read to him at family gatherings. He felt I had special reading abilities so he challenged me to take it to the next step by having me get up and read in front of all in attendance. I am certain that my confidence and comfort level in presenting/speaking to large groups is rooted in those early performances Uncle Tony staged for me.
Your smile and love of life will be forever remembered.
Love,

I am so sad. I had the pleasure of being taught by both Ruggieris and "like father, like son" rings true. Sr. used to label us in class. I was one of the B students--not capable of an A. Sounds harsh, but he did it to push us and it worked. I returned to see him after receiving my first A on a college paper, and he just gave me that smirk...he inspired me to become certified in English, though I couldn't be nearly as crazy as he was. His son knew how to push me too--in 7th grade he literally turned a test I failed into a paper airplane and sailed it out the open window. The message was clear--and now I love social studies! I guess his father taught him how to teach too! May the vivid memories we have comfort his family. He certainly impacted a lot of people.

Mr R was the light of my mornings junior year in 1st period English. Even being out of school for over 20 years now, I still talk about him. Just last week, I read to a friend what he wrote in my year book that year! He wrote sweet, warm and kind words. I am greatful and honored to have been educated by him. I am very sad to hear that such a kind fun loving person suffered for so many years with an aweful illness. Take care and God Bless to his whole family and I know that Mr. R memories will burn bright forever.

It seems so clichéd to talk about how much Mr. Ruggieri will be missed, on how much he has touched the lives of all who new him as a teacher but also as a person as well. However, that doesn't make it any less true. "Rugs" taught not only can you be honorable in life, but also have fun with it. His jokes (telling his students that their vitreous would taste delicious), the former students who randomly stopped by (coming in through the fire escape window no less) and his passion for his students marked him as an outstanding educator. But what I remember most was a laughter that wound around his students and a man who, while imposing, was available to enjoy even the most trivial of moments. It was an honor and privilege to have known him. You will be missed Mr. Ruggieri!

One of a kind, . . . I sit here thinking of the laughter that he gave to all of us for so many years. Tony made me laugh, on a regular basis, more than anybody I think I ever knew; what a precious gift to share with those he loved. An extraordinarily talented and beloved teacher, colleague and friend, I shall miss his special brand of lovable craziness; it always made the weight of the world just a little lighter. As I read these “candles it is clear that so many of us will carry forward his special spirit in our memories and in our hearts. My thoughts and love go out to his family.

I graduated in 1980 and still remember Mr. Ruggieri as one of my favorite teachers (and the photo is exactly how I remember him). He was in his world when he walked down the corridors of Greece Arcadia and engaging all those he met. You found yourself wanting him to not tease or pick on you when you saw him, but glad when he did as he always made you laugh whether at him or yourself!
