Obituary of Janice Lynn Strine

Strine, Jan Irondequoit: Peacefully at home on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at the age of 67 surrounded by her family and friends. She is survived by her partner, Jeanne M. Colombo; sons, David(Brennen) Strine, Brian Strine; grandchildren, Ryland, Graysen, Keeley; sister, Gail(Gerald) Rothman-Marshall; cousin, Keith Holderness; dear friend, Annie Eccher; aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends, colleagues & students. Jan was an educator of the deaf for the past 44 years. She was a professor at R.I.T./NTID and previously taught at the Rochester School for the Deaf. She was a loving, caring and empathetic person, full of bright light. Jan was also a Spiritualist Reverend. Her family will receive friends FRIDAY 1-3pm & 6-9pm at the funeral home (570 Kings Hwy South). Friends are invited to meet the family SATURDAY 9:30am at St. Kateri at Christ the King Church for her funeral mass. Entombment Irondequoit Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be directed to R.I.T - C/O Jan Strine Labyrinth Memorial. A message from RIT: Janice Strine, coordinator of the National Technical Institute for the Deaf Athletic Support Team and liaison to the RIT athletics department, passed away Sept. 21 after a battle with lymphoma. The RIT flag will be lowered to half-staff on Sept. 27 in her memory. "Jan's commitment to and love for our students was obvious in the time and significant effort she devoted to student wellness, both physical and spiritual," says Gerry Buckley, NTID president. "We are grateful for her many years of service to the institute and appreciate her many contributions to our community. She will be greatly missed." Strine coordinated and provided wellness education for students and supported Student Affairs wellness programs and the Center for Intramurals and Recreation. In addition, she was responsible for wellness presentations for NTID Freshman Seminar classes, the Wellness Leadership Certificate program, weekly "Wellness Wednesday" programs and special quarterly wellness programs, such as "What Matters to Me and Why" and "Soul Talks." She also led workshops and provided personal mentoring for students. Throughout the years, she served on a number of committees including the NTID Student Services Management/Chairs Team, the Student Affairs Student Wellness Leadership Team and the NTID Academic Conduct Committee. She also co-chaired the Student Emotional Wellness Team, the NTID Spirituality Task Force and the Student Spirituality Wellness Team.
