Obituary of Doris V. Smith

Please share a memory of Doris to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Smith, Doris V. Rochester: Doris Smith passed away peacefully surrounded by family on May 14, 2014 at age 88. Predeceased by her husband Stanley, she is survived by her sister, Carolyn Smith (Sauquoit, NY) daughter LuAnn (Tom) Holdrege of Sidney, NY; sons Steve (Paula) Smith of Rochester NY and Tim (Kathleen) Smith of Dallas, TX and grandchildren Erin (Alan) Blancaflor of Everett WA, Amy Nieves (Dale Losee) of Bainbridge, NY and many nieces and nephews. She was the daughter of the late Lester and Josephine Coons. Doris was born in Sauquoit NY in 1926 to hardworking parents who taught their children about the value of family and faith. Growing up she loved the outdoors. She married her childhood sweetheart and later moved to Sidney, where she and her husband raised their children. Doris and her family enjoyed living in Sidney. She was actively involved with the many of the Sidney United Methodist churches activities including Sarah Circle, Dorcas, the UMW as well as numerous church bazaar and peanut brittle fund raising events. When asked to help family, church members or neighbors she always said yes. Doris kept busy but still had time to make people feel appreciated and loved. She always had a smile for everyone she met. Doris and her husband loved to travel and they saw nearly every corner of the country in their RV. Exploring and seeing the country was a true joy of hers. In a lifetime of travel they set foot in every state except Alaska. She never let small or large problems slow her down. Twelve years ago she started dialysis three times a week. For many years she drove herself to Oneonta. When that became difficult, members of her church and neighbors and friends came to her rescue and provided transportation. Doris decided to move to Rochester to be with her son when taking care of the house became too much for her. When she left her friends in Sidney she left a small part of her heart there. She loved her home, neighbors and the small town life she left behind. The family would like to thank so many people for their prayers and thoughts. We appreciate all of the support and assistance of the Sidney United Methodist Church, the staff of the Bassett Hospital Dialysis Center in Oneonta, the staff of St Ann's Community, and all of her friends and neighbors in Sidney. No prior calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, on Tuesday May 27th at the United Methodist Church, 12 Liberty St. Sidney, NY. There will be a private internment ceremony following. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Sidney United Methodist Church or St Ann's Foundation, 1500 Portland Av., Rochester NY, 14621.
