Another hero of mine from the greatest generation has answered the final roll call. When I was stationed on Okinawa in the early 1960's I often got to deploy to the Philipine Islands. Manila brewed San Miguel Beer was a favorite of ours. When I told Gene of this, he informed me that he was in Manila when the war ended. To the delight of Gene and a few thousand of his best friends the brewery sustained little or no damage during the war. They also got to enjoy that brew. That's one of the lighter sides of that terrible war. On behalf of the many service people who came after Gene "Thanks for a job well done.
