I have such fond memories of Mr Badger.... He made music fun, calling us his "pussycats". Since I played trumpet, I was only able to enjoy his special teaching gift when the orchestra was preparing for a concert, and the brass section would join the practices. A very special teacher and man.....

Mr. Badger was our favorite teacher in high school and we remember our orchestra days fondly because of him. Orchestra was the best part of the day. He was always so kind, funny and inspiring. My sisters and I played violin and cello and I think he had Diane playing bassoon for a time. He always said that cellists were hams at heart. I guess he was talking about himself. We send warm thoughts to you.

It is with great, deep, sadness that I/we learned of Jim's death. I was one of Jim's first violin students when he came to West Irondequoit and he gave me my life's appreciation for classical music. We had so much fun in the pit for musicals and I vividly remember when the Orchestra received an A in playing for Counties.I remember so many opportunities he gave me and his gentleness towards all the variety of talents. All were treated with kindness and encouragement. He became a colleague when I returned to teach in West Irondeqoit and I joined my husband, fellow teacher, as a friend of Jim's. Our three children had the privilege of coming under JIm's tutelage as cello and bass players. It was our sadness when he retired from West Irondequoit. Jim's "Army stories", his beautiful laugh, his great technique in teaching, his compassion, and his friendship will live with us forever. His impact in teaching, friendship, and community are gifts no death can take away. You must be very proud of your uncle . Blessings to you as your lives continue with this fine man in your heart. Rev. Susan and Dr. John Shafer

I fondly remember working with Mr Badger for the annual school musical. I will always remember him leading the orchestra in the pit and fondly recall his warm smile and caring approach with the students. He was a joy to be around and I will always remember these interactions with fond memories. Rest in peace Mr Badger and Im sure he is conducting the heavenly choir with the same gentle grace and spirit.

I had a great time in orchestra at IHS under Jim Badger in the late 70's - early 80's. He had a great balance between being firm and being fun. To me, the orchestra sounded great! My funnest times and fondest memories of IHS would definitely be of playing trombone in the spring musicals that Jim devoted MANY hours to. I don't imagine he was compensated adequately for those many hours, but it was a thrill for me and the others involved. The positive vibes I got from orchestra under him are one of the reasons I'm a professional musician today.

I remember Mr. Badger so fondly -- as in inspiring teacher and conductor, who challenged us to reach for the best we could perform individually and together in orchestra (as well as in playing string quartets).
I often tell the story of how he let me borrow the full score of "West Side Story" every weekend during our senior year ('75) when we were putting on that show -- how much faith he had in us to handle that score! From that generosity, I began to teach myself how to conduct and to learn to read all the instrument parts in different keys... and now, 40 years later, I spend half my "working retirement" time leading two choirs in Vermont, as well as having conducted the local community orchestra on occasion, with an understanding of just what it means to play or sing in ensemble, that began so early in my life as he mentored so many of us.
Mr. Badger encouraged us -- even as middle school and high school students -- to aspire to the very best we could be: in sight-reading, in developing our ear for intonation, in playing with a true sense of ensemble, and, most of all, in holding a deep passion for music-making. Thank you, Mr. Badger!

I first met Jim in 1954 when he and I were playing in the 7th Army Symphony Orchestra in Germany. The orchestra traveled and played in several countries doing public relations work for the U.S. Army. Then we both happened to move to Rochester at about the same time -- he to teach in Irondequoit and I to Webster. Jim also played cello with our Penfield Orchestra for a while in the 1960's.
I also know that Jim gave generously to the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra for many years. My wife and I are sorry to hear of his passing -- he was a fine contributor to all of our lives.

I now live in Seattle, washington, where I have lived since 1987 (20 short years after graduating Irondequoit). My kind brother, John, who always played in the band, sent me the link to Jim's Obit. "Mr. Badger", he was my violin, then bass teacher from 4th grade through high school. He knew what excited me, and as such volunteered me for all the high school musicals and all county orchestra (sophomore year). Orchestra was my favorite class.
He was an awesome teacher, a friend and one I look forward to meeting in the next life. His passing saddens me because I now wish I had kept in touch after high school. Next time!

Mr. Badger was my orchestra teacher many, many years ago and I still remember his high standards. That is the greatest gift a teacher can give a student--the knowledge that discipline and hard work are the only avenues to excellence. He was a warm caring guy who never compromised his standards. I feel so lucky to have been influenced by him!

I have fond memories of playing the violin in orchestra. Looking at my yearbook from senior year (1977), Mr. Badger thanked me for 8 years of music making. I was never very good, but he appreciated the efforts. He was a wonderful man. I'm sorry for your loss.
