Ken Silvio was my teacher back when I was in 6th grade. He was the best teacher I ever had by far. I have never forgotten him. He always had a friendly smile to share and lots of great ideas. So sorry for your loss.

Mr. Silvio was my teacher at #3 school for fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. He was the greatest. He used our proximity to downtown Rochester as a way for us to learn in place. We went to Jimmy Carter's campaign rally in Fall 1976, Eastman Theatre (Isiah Jackson played Cats Cradle with us while waiting for the bus), rides in the Volkswagen, learning black and white photography, reading chapter books, his faith in my ability to do math and an unwaivering commitment to ensure that I matured from a 9 year old kid to a junior higher with a love of learning. My friend Tina posted earlier her memories that made me laugh. I no longer live in Rochester, but had the good fortune to see him and his son about 20 years ago when celebrating my parents wedding anniversary. He recognized me and made sure to say hello, something I truly cherished. Wishing you all peace and comfort knowing what a difference he made for so many of us.

Mr. Silvio was the best teacher I ever had. I was lucky enough to have him for 3 years (4th-6th) in the late 70s. Highlights include:
Backgammon tournaments
The darkroom
Walking downtown to see Jimmy Carter
Poetry
Riding in his beat up Rabbit to get mcdonalds
Capeesh?
That laugh
Eye rolling
Disappearing to the library and reading for hours
That time he got mad and broke the overhead
That time I had really chapped lips and he bought me Vaseline
How he knew he was amazing and didn't hold back admitting it
Perhaps the best thing I got from him is a love of learning and a joy of teaching. Countless children will never know his name, but have benefitted from his philosophy. Every time my students shout back capeesh to me, a little bit of Mr. Silvio is there with his independent, sarcastic, joy of learning community feeling.
I loved this man!

We are so sorry to hear of Ken's passing. We were shocked to see his name in the obituary this morning.
Paul and Ken played squash at Midtown. They played their hearts out and had a great time together. Ken turned Paul on to Lyle Lovett and gave Paul a cassette of his music.
Later on we heard that Ken would help us less savvy computer folks. We gave him a call. Ken was so patient and had a great sense of humor. We are very saddened and offer our condolences.

I was so saddened to see this obituary. I am one of the many he had a "pivotal influence" on. He was my 5th and 6th grade teacher at #3 school '76-'78. He was the best teacher I had. He gave my class such a special opportunity to be creative find our gifts and talents. More recently I would see him at the Clothesline Fest. helping his daughter sell her jewelry and he still remembered me. I will never forget him.
Thank you Mr. Silvio. RIP

Im am so sad to hear of this terrific guy's passing.Kenny always made me laugh every time I saw him no matter how long the separation.I remember him so vividly in High school as upbeat, smiling..always the center of fun attention.
I would have really liked to have known if he were sick, as I would have come to see him and enjoy that smile and attitude one more time.
As the family is coping with this loss..Please know that Kenny brought so much joy to those who knew him that the family should be proud of what this man meant to new friends and old.
As a teacher I feel confident that the students absolutely loved him with that infectious smile and great attitude.I must admit I was shocked to hear of his passing but I know that the joy he brought to me is shared by hundreds who knew this incredible guy who I know has a place in heaven..his wonderful attitude and joy he brought to this life will be rewarded in the next life.I can't think of a better person to be with God.
We all loved you Kenny..go in peace old friend.I will miss you.
Love,
Ferdinand

OMG! I am shocked and so sorry to hear of Ken's passing. We began teaching together at #17 School in 1968, and the laughs began and continued for the all the years that we shared just about every new teacher adjustment. We both eventually went in different directions in the district, but reconnected a year or so ago after 40+ years. We talked and laughed and compared notes on our lives for several hours at the Highland Diner. We promised to do it again, but never did find the time. Knowing that he is no longer "out there" leaves a huge gap in my history, but memories of the good times when we both believed we could change the world of teaching. For all of you who knew him, most probably better than I, we will smile each time we think of him. R.I.P. Friend.

With shock and sadness, I just learned of Ken's passing. I had a dream once, long after retirement, that I had been abandoned at Central Office and could not find a way home. Ken came up to me and said, “Don't worry, you know I will always show you the way home.” And he did, so often.
I will always be grateful for his humor, wisdom, and friendship.

Lori and family please accept my condolences. I first met Ken years ago when he put a slide show on,along with music, for a elementary class that my son Christopher was graduating from. I was impressed and told him so. Instant likening. Got to know him better through the years as we shared mutual friends and likes, such as movie critiques and crosswords. Sometimes I would attend weekly lunches, too. Just a few weeks ago I met grandchild Lorenzo at Mayers Hardware with Tom B. Very nice young man. As we both liked crosswords, to me he certainly fits this 6-letter word. CLASSY. He will be missed. May he Rest In Peace.

Ken and I were good friends in earlier years. Though unrelated life circumstances meant we didn't see each other as much in later years, I always enjoyed running into him (often in the pool at Midtown). We always shared similar musical tastes, and I admired his intelligence, wit and empathy. A good man -- and I'm shocked that he's gone. RIP, Ken.
