Murphy, Donald J.
Irondequoit: Age 94, born in Rochester, NY, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2017. Don was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Anna (Meagher) Murphy; sister, Helen Knapp, and brothers, Jack and Leo Murphy; son-in-law, Hank Mannella; brothers-in-law, John Sullivan and John Knapp. Don is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Mary (Laragy) Murphy; loving children, Daniel (Mary) Murphy, Ann Mannella, James Murphy, Patrick (Carol) Murphy; grandchildren, Christopher (Kate), Kristin, Lisa (Ted), Sarah (Steve), Evan, Hannah, Stephen, Theresa, and great-granddaughter, Rose; sister, Marjorie Sullivan; sister-in-law, Mary Murphy, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Don was a 1941 graduate of Aquinas Institute. In February 1943, he entered active US Army service (961 Engineer Maintenance Company). He arrived in Normandy on D-Day+30 and was honorably discharged December 2, 1945.
After his military service, Don had a distinguished 43-year long career at Kodak, starting as a machinist apprentice and working his way to department head. An active member of St. Thomas the Apostle Church since 1954, he served in the Legion of Mary for 40 years as well as participated in the Nocturnal Adoration and Holy Name Societies.
A special thanks to his caregivers at Rochester Regional RGH Seneca Ridge Dialysis Center, Sands-Constellation Cardio Unit and Hildebrandt Hospice Care Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Good Samaritan Transportation at St. Cecilia's Church, Association for the Blind, St. Thomas the Apostle Church or Holy Cross Church.
His family will receive friends Thursday 4-7pm at the funeral home (570 Kings Hwy S.) Friends are invited to meet the family Friday 10:00am at St. Kateri at St. Thomas the Apostle Church for his funeral mass. Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
