Suzanne embraced the notion of being in service to others with sincerity and humility. As an educator, her outreach to students at the margins of society, especially refugees, speaks of her belief in the innate dignity and value of all children, and their right to an exceptional education. She saw the contribution and the success of these students not just in their academic achievements, but in the values, determination, and richness of life experience that they brought to the school community. A student, who had been given an opportunity to attend Mercy by Mrs. Johnston, texted me yesterday to inform me of her passing. In trying to explain how important Sue was to her, she said it most simply, "She was fabulous."
