I have Known John all of our lives, starting in Penn Yan and golfing at Ontario Golf Club. I will never forget him. He ALWAYS left me with a big smile on both our faces. Rest in Peace John. Bill Schrouder

John was my first "steady." We went "steady" for a couple of weeks, which entailed meeting up at baseball games at the baseball park on Elm Street. We quietly broke up with only a few words. We remained friends throughout high school, and along with George, shared lots of adventures. There are many fun stories of John, that I can recall....but you know him, and can imagine! He and his brother were famous for their warmth and charm. May he be in the arms of the angels, where he certainly belongs! Lyn Schofield Winer

In 1981 John “Chief”Gillard took me under his wing as a new Navy Aircrewman, by taking me out on an EA3B Skywarrior for my first deployment on the USS Eisenhower in the Mediterranean. Most of the Chiefs I learned at the time would not fly off carriers at that point in their career. They had “been there - done that.” John had “Been there,” was still doing it, and was passing it on. Respect is a word that come to mind. Fair Winds and Following Seas my friend - We have the Watch!
