Please share a memory of Jan to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Bakker, Jan Webster: Sunday, June 13, 2021 at age 92. Jan was born in Hengelo, Netherlands to the late Evert & Johnanna Bakker. He left us peacefully at home with the help of Rochester Regional Health, Lifetime Care. Many thanks to his nurse Irene and all of the angels there and at Rochester General Hospital. Jan is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Gloria (Speciale) Bakker; sons, Raymond and Robert; daughter, Lisa; his sister, Johnanna (Gurt) Lemke, her sons, Christopher (Katherine) and R. Anthony (Maria) who live in Canada; sister-in-law, Marilou Paliani; brothers-in-law, Michael Speciale and Gary Speciale. Jan had quite a history as a boy, having to survive the occupation of his country and gathering information and materials for his father to give to the underground, while having an enemy soldier living in their home. Jan attended college for engineering and was a veteran of the Army protecting his Netherlands. He later befriended a Canadian soldier who sponsored the family to immigrate to Canada after the war. A job at Kodak brought him to the States. He found this too confining and took a job at R.P. Fedder as a Sales Representative. He often spoke of the beauty of the countryside and loved what nature has given us, while calling on customers. Having come from a sea faring family he was happiest sailing his Cape Dory sail boat and was a member of the Genesee Yacht Club. He enjoyed hunting with his friend, Ed De Rycke, target practice and traveling. Never at a loss for words, he loved telling about his travels. His family will receive friends Saturday, June 19, 3:00 - 5:00pm at the funeral home (570 Kings Highway So.). Interment will be held privately. Memorials may be directed to Lifetime Care Hospice, 3111 Winton Road S., Rochester, NY 14623-9917 or to Rochester General Hospital Foundation, 100 Kings Highway S., Rochester, NY 14617.
