I was the best friend of Jeannine's daughter, Nicki, during jr high and high school. I spent lots of time at the Turula home after school. Mrs. Turula was always soft-spoken, kind, gracious and welcoming of teenagers in her home, at any time of day or night. I remember playing Rolling Stones and Beatles records and dancing in their living room, over and over again and babysitting with Nicki for her neighbors, the Centolas. She was always proud of her children and taught us many things about France.
I moved to California years ago and in October '22, when my 100 yr old Mother was in rehab at St. Anne's home, I discovered that Mrs. Turula was now living at their independent living center, Chapel Oaks. I had thought of her many times over the years, especially after hearing of Nicki's passing, so one day after visiting Mom in rehab, I walked over to Chapel Oaks and knocked on her door, totally unannounced. She stayed seated in her chair, yet that familiar voice welcomed me to come in. It had been 50+ years since I had seen her and although she didn't remember me by site, she was delighted after I explained who I was. We had a wonderful chat, I was amazed by her sharp intellect, as she told me about her grandchildren who ironically had just been to visit her that morning. I was especially interested to learn about Nicki's children and as she spoke, her face lit up like a Christmas tree.
I am grateful to have reconnected with her recently. Mrs.Turula, thank you for welcoming teenagers into your home with a trusting spirit that made us think that we mattered. I loved your daughter, we shared many years together, and will think of you both often as the years pass. RIP knowing that you left your mark on the world both through your family, and with your generosity at St Anne's.
God Bless,
