Dear Schoepfel Family,
lSorry I couldn't be with you physically yesterday. but I was with you in spirit.
Thank you for sharing the tribute video. It brought back so many treasured memories from childhood of Larry swimming in the pool at Trelawne with Shirlea and "Digger" aka Mike and lots of neighborhood kids. That was a big deal in those days not many had one. Through Sea Breeze Fire Department many of our families were friends. I remember Mr. Schoepfel taking movies of us in the living room with his new camera. The lights were so bright it blinded us. All we could do was squint as he urged us to smile.
As adult friends with Jim Bergen, Sue and Rick Latson Larry tried a new adventure. Larry's one and only camping trip to the Adirondack's was proof Larry did not like tent camping. We still laugh about it and in time so did he. He left early with horrible black fly bites that swelled up that were attracted by his sweet smelling toiletries. Our dog lifted his leg on Larry's tent. It really was a comedy routine. He sold his brand new camping equipment right after. So many of us shared countless good times with him that we will always tell.
He could have been a stand up comic/entertainer with his impressions and quick wit. He sure was for us. I am laughing now at his Gleason impersonations.
One day, after Jim and I had children Larry stopped over. Our oldest daughter asked him if he was the Cookie Monster from Sesame Street. She meant it as a compliment because she was thinking he might be under the costume since to her Larry was tall and a big guy in those days. She loved Cookie Monster. Larry didn't see the humor. She is in her forties now and still remembers it.
Larry really was an old softy under that grumpy persona. I will always appreciate the kindness and concern he showed me when I was going through a difficult time.
"Sometimes the feeling that life is great just swells up inside you and fills you with joy." Jackie Gleason
Seeing the photos of Larry after he met your son and you, Jackie, and now grandchildren it is so evident that he found true unconditional love and unwavering support that had eluded him. Holding those babies and every photo with Kevin and you Larry oozes unbridled joy and happiness.
Your loss is profound may it bring comfort to know that Larry's bright light will continue to be celebrated and shine on in all the hearts he touched on earth. May you find peace in your now even more treasured memories. You give him eternal life as you pay forward his lessons, continue a tradition, tell his story to future generations but most of all love each other.
We'll look for you over the "moon" my friend, RIP
I will make a donation to Sea Breeze Volunteer Fire Department in his honor.
My sincere condolences,
Donna LaTour-Bergen
