Helen and Chet met my mother, Bernie Dahl, when she was in nursing school in Rochester, NY. My mother left Rochester but the friendship continued for over 70 years - by phone when they lived far away. I remember a lot of fun visits between my family and the Harkolas during my youth. My condolences to the Harkola family. Here's a picture of Chet & Helen serving guests at my wedding! And one of them, along with some friends and my brother Tom, cleaning up after the wedding. Chet said it was the best wedding reception he'd ever been to!

Helen was so engaging with us as children, teens and adults. We loved being in her presence whether she was baking, sewing, cutting coupons (and let us call her Couponski), or entertaining. She’d bounce into the house to visit with her dear friend my mom Josephine Chase while on her way to golf. They shared their faith and love of their families. Helen barely knew us when we first moved to Chapel Hill but was quick to dive into action when tragedy struck us. She silently appeared and immersed herself in cleaning, cooking and consoling us. We all love her dearly. May your memories of this dynamic woman bring you smiles and comfort.

Helen was such a marvelous seamstress! She patiently taught me and Dianne Hinds how to make matching purses and ponchos.I can still picture the fringes and blue and green checked fabric.

She was a petite bubbly bundle of positivity who always showed her interest in us and talked to us like we were people too and not just kids. And I liked her rapid delivery conversation style that was often accompanied with smiles and laughs. Her fashion and interior design style was fabulous!

Through our 75 years of friendship we went to so many interesting places shared so many fun times together; like cooking, baking, sewing, gardening, and children. We saw each other’s joys, sorrows, and family happenings including births, christenings, and wedding days; all through it traversing our distance between Syracuse and Rochester.
