I want to write to honor my neighbor and friend, Joe.
Our family moved in next door to Joe in 1996. Our sons were age 14 and 10. Almost immediately, Joe became my oldest son's mentor, being engaged in horticulture, gardening, and hosting a variety of chickens, ducks, geese, and other birds in his back yard.
Joe quickly became a beloved neighbor eagerly sharing tips on local goods and services, helpful ideas for repairs or projects, and always a treat for the boys. We were always drawn in with his amusing stories of his animals and tragic stories of his upbringing during Nazi occupation of Poland.
Many times we shared chores through the seasons, and my son Thomas gained much by way of insight and skill through Joe's meaningful explanations and conversations as he helped Joe in his greenhouse, along the pond, or around the chicken coops. It's a contribution to our family I will always cherish and never forget.
Throughout 28 years of neighborly connections, Joe continued his outpouring of generosity, delightful stories, and love. His upbeat and encouraging "How'ya doing Jim!" always brought a smile to my face and a warm feeling in my heart.
We will miss Joe, but will be forever grateful to God for him, God's true embodiment of a good neighbor. -Jim Reeverts, Savage Rd neighbor
