Cape Vincent, NY. Friday, February 6, 2009 at the age of 93. Predeceased by his brothers, Robert, Cornelius, Aloysius, Rev. Msgr. Joseph , Leo and Bernard Gefell, sisters, Mary Gefell and Frances Sullivan. Msgr. Gefell is survived by his nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was the Assistant Pastor at St. Alphonse's Church (Auburn, NY), Immaculate Conception Church (Ithaca, NY), St. Michael's Church (Newark, NY), St. Lawrence Church (Rochester, NY) and St. Andrew's Church (Rochester, NY), Pastor at Our Lady of the Lake Church (Ontario, NY). Msgr. Gefell was an avid fisherman, accomplished private pilot instructor in instrument flying, as well as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division in combat conditions, completing 101 jumps throughout his military career from 1948-1974 in the US Army.
The family wishes to extend their warmest thank you and sincerest appreciation to the Sisters of St. Joseph, Watertown, NY where they cared for him at their Motherhouse since August of 2007.
His family will receive friends Tuesday 3-7pm at the funeral home. Msgr. Gefell will lie in state from 10:00 to 11:00am Wednesday at Christ the King Church with his Funeral Liturgy to follow at 11:00am. Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
