Joel’s passing leaves a huge void in our community, especially for those of us struggling through homelessness; overcoming the challenges facing ex-offenders and substance abuse recovery; and those impacted by generational poverty. His support, humor and laughter will be missed but the impact of his work and passion for uplifting our community will continue through his legacy.

Joel and I worked at the Housing Council together and our paths have crossed many times since. I always appreciated his commitment to the community and his genuine interest to help others. And I loved that sense of humor that was uniquely his. I will always appreciate what he added to our community through his service to improve neighborhoods and the life circumstances of those in need.

Joel was one of a kind, he made such a positive impression and impact on those around him - whom he knew and didn’t know. I’ll never forget the first time I met Terrie and Joel at the JLR/Tempro pizza and movie night. That night I was exposed to a new community and it was an eye opening experience. The event really struck me in the heart in many ways, but what made the biggest imprint was when Joel asked me to walk with him around this big unknown building to ask people to come join us. It was simultaneously one of the most uncomfortable and eye opening experiences, but I was willing because he made me feel safe. He was also willing to answer all my ”sheltered suburbanite” questions without passing judgement.
From organizations to individuals, our community will surely feel the loss of his generosity, bravery and thoughtfulness. Terrie and family, I wish you much strength and healing during this difficult time ahead.

I was just thinking about you the other day. No matter how long it had been since the last time we spoke, we always seemed to pickup right where we left off and I am sad that I didn’t pick up the phone and call.
I still remember the first day we met. Our organizations were just embarking on a partnership for a new housing program that would help house veteran families. You were so confident, knowledgeable, energized and passionate. Oh and a social butterfly! I’m not sure I would have gotten through the first year without you. You were so dedicated to everything you did, I’m not sure you ever slept though. I always enjoyed our meetings and walks to get more caffeine. You were more than just a colleague, you were a friend. I will always cherish the time we got to spend together and all that you taught me.

I met Joel when he was working for Americorps. Watching his enthusiasm helping residents revitalize and take pride in their Rochester neighborhoods was electric. You just knew by watching Joel interact with the public on important issues in the community that he had found his purpose in life. Smart, passionate and dedicated, he landed his job with the Housing Council and continued to soar and spread his wings over the Rochester community ever since. Joel encouraged me to volunteer and helped inspire me in my decision to return to college. He had a big heart and a big mind. A social man, he enjoyed fun club music and tunes, but he also cherished the quiet and poetic lyrics of a Don McLean tune.
My deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, friends and co-workers.

TEAMWORK Makes The DREAMWORK!!! VOA STAR STRONG!! Joel genuinely cared about everyone. I can hear him now saying “Joy thanks for coming to work and being a positive asset to the team”. He always wore a smile on his face no matter what. We would often remind each other that we have lives outside of work. Joel heart was way to big for this small world. I love you Joel and the positivity and change you stood on.
I remember when the babysitter didn’t get my daughter from school when Joel started working at the VOA. I was panicking he said Joy come on we going to get her and when my daughter got in his car. They talked to each other all the way to my house. He gave her rain deer antlers and she invited him to our 4 th of July Cookout. She was sad when I told her that you passed away.
Joel was a really jokester with a contagious laugh. You’ll be missed Gentle Giant

Joel, I will never forget you. You have left behind a legacy at VOA of caring, compassion, and slightly odd and sarcastic humor that cannot be matched. You were truly one of the good ones and we will do our best to remember and honor you in our work. Thank you for being you.

I have many stories about Joel but this one is the best….
We decided to go to and hang out in Niagara Falls one day nearly 16 years ago. After dropping off my Aunt Maria at the Toronto Airport we found an exquisite Italian restaurant, had a delicious dinner then smoked some fine cigars with dessert. We got into my 1999 Honda Accord and I immediately began to feel nauseous from the heavy meal followed by a smoking a potent Cuban. I wanted to pull off the road but there was considerable traffic that evening on Lundy's Lane. I began to vomit all over the dashboard and steering wheel trying hopelessly to hold it all back with my left hand. I tried to aim the second burst out the window while making a left hand turn into a Tim Horton’s parking lot, but the glass jammed halfway down, so some vomit made it outside while the remainder ran down the inside of the driver side door. There was a third burst before I managed to park the car, there in which Joel, the hero of this story, fell out of the car rolling on the ground laughing. I looked so pathetic as I exited the Honda. Somehow, mass of vomit landed on the roof of my car.
There was a car show in that same Tim Horton’s parking lot and this stranger approached me surprisingly speaking with a Southern accent, “What happened? Did your buddy puke on ya?” I replied, “No. We smoked some good Cuban cigars after a rich dinner, and I got sick. Look, I had some gnocchi and some mushrooms.” While I pointed out the undigested items I ate for dinner, seagulls swept down and began to feast on the same meal I enjoyed just 45 minutes earlier. Joel was still laughing uncontrollably and rolling on the ground.
Joel wandered off as a contemplated how I was going to clean my vehicle. We still had to cross the border and an hour ride to return home. Joel returned with a roll of paper towels and a bottle of Windex he managed to convince a Tim Horton’s employee to provide.
Joel was still laughing.
Joel wandered off again as I tried to wipe the vomit that seeped into every crevice of my Honda Accord dashboard. The odor was unbearable. He returned with a bag of items from a nearby gift shop. The bag contained a change of clothes for me to change into, because like I mentioned above, we still had to cross the border and drive an hour home. Inside the bag was a tank top shirt and pair of shorts. I should be more specific. The extra-large, pink tank top and the shortest, black pair of shorts purchased from girls’ rack. He’s such a good friend. I looked “fabulous”!
We crossed the border without incident and drove the hour-long ride home with the windows down….and Joel laughing the entire way.
Classic Joel.
