Mr. Pivnick was my 6th grade teacher at #38 school. I was extremely shy and uncomfortable in casual conversation. It was his patience and kindness that brought me out of that shell. I remember him taking me aside and said, "do not hang your head down when I am speaking to you or anyone else is speaking to you. Look straight in my eyes and their eyes." It really was a life changing moment for me. A lesson I have never forgotten. Fast forward many many years, I had the good fortune of meeting Mr. Pivnick as his nurse in an outpatient setting. With a smile, he looked at me and said I remember you. "I see you have excellent eye contact now." I remember him as the most amazing teacher I have ever encountered. Your family has been blessed with his legacy.

Lauren,
Just learning of dear Bert's passing. He was such a mainstay of your Mom and always present at celebrations at Nazareth College. I loved chatting with him at those affairs--always a stimulating conversationalist (though quiet-spoken). We could go on forever about books. I am very glad you had your Dad for so many years. His wisdom will continue to be with you and guide you in the future. Know that I keep you, Pat and Bert in my heart. Allow wonderful memories to bring you solace and peace.

Lauren what a touching tribute to your father, I smiled as I read it. You parents were good friends of my parents, Jim and Judy and I remember even as a young child your parents were gracious, kind and fun. I remember Bert's deep voice and gentle manner. I and my wife (who also knew them) sending our best thoughts at this difficult time.

My name is Karyl Pizzari (Hahn was my maiden name) and I was fortunate enough to have Mr. Pivnick as my 6th grade teacher, graduating from #38 School in 1969. He was my first male teacher and at first I was very afraid of him, but I quickly learned that he was there for me, had very high expectations of us, and would be a teacher I would never forget. He empowered me that year to stand up for myself when others bullied me and to be proud of my knowledge and desire to learn instead of trying to hide. From that grade on, he has been my favorite teacher, one I frequently went back to visit until his retirement. Since that time, we corresponded each year at Christmas, keeping each other up to date on our families, interests, and yearly highlights as well as discussing various changes in education. Mr. Pivnick is the reason I went on to become a Special Education teacher, recently retiring after 41 years in the North Syracuse Central Schools. I took from my experience in his class that all students can learn anything given a teacher's encouragement, determination, and support. I remember my mother telling Mr. Pivnick at Open House that I didn't know how to tell time. Mr. Pivnick took that under advisement and proceeded to ask me every day to tell him when it was time to do a particular task such as go to PE, music, lunch, or get ready to go home. I learned how to tell time that year . . . quickly! My senior year in college at SUNY Geneseo, I frequently was a substitute teacher at #38 School. Each time I was there, Mr. Pivinick reacted like a proud father, introducing me to the staff as his former student! The one thing I couldn't do was call him Bert. It just didn't seem right. My sincerest sympathies to his family and friends. I will always think of Mr. Pivnick which such admiration and fondness.

I had the best luck moving next to Bert and Pat in 95. They were smart gifted educators who were well informed and had a wonderful way of communicating that showed and commanded respect. Bert was a little more reserved than Pat at first but when Pat first went to Cherry Ridge and Bert was there by himself he talked to me quite a bit. One day in our wondering conversation I was talking about my love of "Old" printing methods and he brought up his stint working with the Leo Hart Company and I told him to “Wait right there!", and ran to my basement and found the promotional Poster made by and for the Leo Hart Company in the 60’s for their new plant located on north Clinton in between Ridge Road and Keeler Street, where Maynard’s electric was in the 80s.
When he opened it couldn’t believe his eyes. He stood silent and his eyes started to well up. He asked if he could barrow it and I told him he could have it, but he insisted he would return it. The multi folded posters final reveal was a full floor view of the whole shop and he quickly started naming names and what each station was and their purpose. That little connection meant a lot to him but more to me. We became friends and he was golden. My last contact with Lauren was years ago and I cautiously reached out to see how he was and was surprised and delighted to hear he was well at the age of 99. That was before the Era of Covid.
Today I attended mass with my 92 year old uncle Raymond at St. Anne’s, and was woken up when I heard Bert’s name come up in a prayer for the recently departed. Holy mackerel Bert. 102 ! You made the world better and your loss is softer knowing your strength and heart is still with us in your beautiful daughter Lauren. Peace be with you my friend
