Obituary of Norman Alosco Burgess

Burgess, Norman A. Rochester: Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at the age of 80. Pre-deceased by his wife of 52 years, Eleanor Harger Burgess. Norman is survived by his sisters, Mary Lou(Bob Paradise) Koester, Phyllis Parcells; nieces and nephews, Philip Parcells, Joyce(Jim) Kowba, Nancy(Jamie) Cunningham and Richard (Debbie) Smith; seven great nieces and nephews and 2 great, great nieces; also survived by special in laws, Marilyn, Tom, Charles(Donna) and Mary Frances Steele. Norm graduated from the "old" Irondequoit High School in 1948 and won a Navy ROTC scholarship to the University of Rochester, graduating in 1952 and receiving his Masters of Education in 1960. He served as a gunnery officer on the battleship New Jersey during and after the Korean conflict. As a public school educator, his career was within the City School District of Rochester, N.Y. serving many years as the Central Office Director of Personnel. His wife, Eleanor, shared her career with him in the district. His affiliations, among others, included Psi Upsilon at the University of Rochester, Phi Delta Kappa School Administrators fraternity and Roser Memorial Church in Anna Maria, Florida. Norm sends a special farewell to his caring family, his loyal friends and the "nearest and dearest" friends in the First Friday Group. He and Eleanor lived many happy years in an 1811 Chili farmhouse and later restored an 1870 Corn Hill townhouse in Rochester. For over 42 years, they spent summers at their Canandaigua Lake cottage with a sailboat and good neighbors, Streb, Jim Badger, and his sisters, Mary Lou and Phyllis. In retirement, Norm was an antiques/art collector and dealer. Retirement winters were spent in Holmes Beach and later, Bradenton, Florida.
